In her presentation, Jan will share how she got the ideas for her books, the process of writing and publishing, vocabulary, characterization, writing techniques, plot, dialogue, etc. She will give an overview of her books and read one of them aloud.
Janet Hasselbring came to speak to our students at an opportune and impressionable time! Her book talk complimented our writing study of small moments, which emphasizes the importance of writing stories from your own true life. Jan’s natural storytelling ability entertained my kindergarten students as she explained how her curious observations of nature developed into story ideas. Her book, “What Do You See Mrs. Night Heron?” combines rhythmic poetry and beautiful illustrations captivating a reader’s attention. As our class studies reading and writing informational text, Jan’s books will serve as mentor texts.

The presentation has increased our children’s knowledge of birds and wildlife in our area. The children were able to hear the book read by the author and share their experiences and knowledge.

Note: Jan will provide a book order which must be sent home with the children following the presentation. She will then collect the returned orders, sign the books and return them to school to be taken home by the students.
